The XBee, from Digi
International, is a wireless transceiver (modem)
using the IEEE 802.15.4 Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Network
protocol (LR-WPAN) for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) or for mesh
networking use ZigBee or DigiMesh
This allows addressable communications between nodes. Data may be sent to individual nodes (point-to-point), or to
all nodes in range (point-to-multipoint) using a broadcast address.
The devices use clear channel assessment (CCA) on a CSMA/CA
network which helps ensure devices do not talk-over one another.
In point-to-point communications, error checking,
acknowledgements and retries are used to ensure data delivery.
The use of flow control (RTS) helps ensure devices, such as
the BASIC Stamp, do not miss incoming data. These devices are great in wireless sensor & control
networks, robotics and for teaching networking! Use the BASIC
Stamp or other microcontrollers, such as the SX, Propeller Chip,
Javelin, AVRs, PICs, etc, for networking devices.
Using the BASIC Stamp, code to send data is as simple as:
SEROUT TXpin, 84, [DEC x,CR]
And to accept a byte of data:
SERIN RXpin, 84, [DEC x]
Optionally, the device may be configured to use flow
control so the data is buffered, then the BASIC Stamp may use:
SERIN RXpin/RTSpin, 84, [DEC x]

This new book from McGraw-Hill has a chapter on
using the Parallax Propeller with XBee's for wireless networking. It
discusses AT and API programming through examples. Through a project a
3-node bot with graphical monitoring is explored. AppBee boards
are used for XBee mounting.
